Strategic Focus : Borneo Rhino Alliance My title
| 5.
To locate, capture and translocate isolated rhinos into the Borneo Rhino Sanctuary |
(A) To discuss, decide and justify targeted areas of capture of rhinos amongst stakeholders, particularly Sabah Wildlife Department, Sabah Forestry Department and Yayasan Sabah (where appropriate). The basis of justification will be on:
(i) Focussing on rhinos that are either living in sub-optimal habitats, isolated individuals, or individuals that are believed to be especially prone to poaching. Details of on-the-ground operations with acknowledgement of terrain, chances of success and the economics of efforts should be used as additional supporting input to assist in decision-making; (ii) The information available for each population or individual giving emphasis on the sex of individuals to make up the first 5 individuals to be placed in the BRS facility. (B) To locate, capture and translocate isolated rhinos to BRS facility, on the basis of lessons learned from previous capture operations in Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, combined with currently available technologies and professionally recommended protocols. Locating, capturing and translocating rhinos will be done following the general protocols as outlined below: (i) Locating the rhinos will be done in order to establish the common routes taken by the animals and to plan for the most strategic points for capture. Among others, capture points should be planned to be within the shortest distance for transportation; (ii) Precautions will be taken to give the best judgment on what types of traps to be used and the best practices of rhino handling once one is captured. The aim must be to allow for the best conditions of the rhino and to reduce stress and possibility of injuries; (iii) Details of means of translocation will be decided in the field although all plans must be in place before the capture. Animals might be transported using a barge, a truck or a helicopter depending on the conditions in the field; (iv) Once translocated into the BRS facility, field operations of locating, capturing and transfer of the animals are completed and the rhinos will be under the care of the BRS. |
