Yayasan Sime Darby visit to Tabin-17 February 2009
The work conducted by BORA was initiated by Sabah State government funds, through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Evironment, and generous donations raised at a fund raising luncheon held in Kota Kinabalu in March 2009. In July 2009, BORA was given a significant boost with the announcement of a substantial three-year commitment from Yayasan Sime Darby which will go towards developing and operating the Borneo Rhino Sanctuary at Tabin Wildife Reserve, a joint effort involving Sabah Wildlife Department and BORA. Yayasan Sime Darby continues to be the major source of funding for BORA. This has been topped up at end of 2009 by a grant from WWF-Germany, which allows BORA to sustain and develop activities other than those funded by Yayasan Sime Darby. In mid 2010, BORA received a further grant, from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, to sustain the work of rhino protection units, which monitor and represent a presence in the border areas of Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Unfortunately, the medium and long-term financial situation for rhino conservation remains insecure. BORA will need to confirm fresh infusions of financial support if it is to continue its important mission to save the Bornean rhino from extinction.
